  1.                 TIM FOR WINDOWS DEMO PROGRAM
  2.       Installation directives - Release Auguast 6, 1992

  4. TIM for Windows is a program for image processing. It operates on
  5. images from the real-world, in order to get data out of them. Images
  6. can be aquired using a video camera and a frame grabber, or imported
  7. as a TIFF file.
  8.  
  9. TIMWIN has a large set of operations and functions, including:
  10.  
  11. * image processing: pixel operations, linear and non-linear filters,
  12.   bitplane- and morphologic operations, 2D-FFT, graphics
  13. * operations for measurement and control
  14. * a full language for writing scripts and analyzing results
  15.   (including compiler,  editor & debugger)
  16. * an extended on line help
  17.  
  18. You can issue commands using menus, but for experienced users a
  19. command line interface is available with history, command line
  20. editing, etc.
  21.  
  22. TIMWIN runs on a PC-AT with:
  23. * Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1 in standard or enhanced mode
  24. * At least 2, but preferably 4 MB of memory
  25. * A VGA display (super VGA, 256 colours recommended for image
  26.   display)
  27. * 2.5 MB of free disk space
  28. * An Imaging Technology Inc. frame grabber is optional. With no
  29.   grabber, the necessary image storage is created in standard memory,
  30.   which will increase the memory requirements.
  31.  
  32. The TIMWIN-Demo program is a limited version of the full program:
  33.  
  34. * only 256x256 image processing is supported
  35. * the compiler is disabled, so you cannot execute self-made command
  36.   file programs
  37. * writing images to disk is disabled
  38.  
  39. The TIMWIN-Demo program is distributed on floppy disk and by anonymous
  40. ftp from several sites.

  42. Conditions
  43. ~~~~~~~~~~
  44. This software is intended to give the image processing community an
  45. impression of the possibilities of TIM for Windows.
  46. You may use, copy and distribute it freely.
  47. You may not:
  48. - modify the software,
  49. - change the start-up message,
  50. - remove the above described limitations,
  51. - sell the software.

  53. TIM is a registered trade mark.
  54. DIFA and TEA cannot be held responsible or liable for any damages that
  55. might result of the use of TIMWIN Demo.
  56. Using TIMWIN Demo implies acceptance of these conditions.

  58. Installation from downloaded files
  59. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  60. The TIMWIN-Demo files are self extracting archives: timwin1.exe
  61. and timwin2.exe. To install TIMWIN demo from downloaded files, follow
  62. the instructions below.

  64. * At the DOS command line, unpack the files TIMWIN1.EXE and TIMWIN2.EXE
  65.   by running them (enter timwin1 and timwin2 respectively)
  66.   You can do this in a temporary directory, but you can also do it
  67.   in the intended TIMWIN directory, e.g. c:\timwin.
  68.  
  69. Further see the instructions for 'Installation from floppy disk',
  70. except that you specify the install program without argument,
  71. but with a path ('c:\timwin\install')

  73. Installation from floppy disk
  74. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  75. To install TIMWIN-Demo from floppy disks, insert disk 1 and run
  76. install a: or  install b: from the Windows program manager (not from
  77. the MS-DOS prompt):
  78.  
  79. * In the program manager window, select File and then Run.
  80. * Enter 'install a:'  or  'install b:'
  81. * Answer the questions and installation takes place automatically.
  82.  
  83. If, after installation, TIMWIN complains about memory, replace the file
  84. IMAGES.TIM by IMGMIN.XXX, where XXX symbolises the frame grabber you are
  85. using (e.g. 'copy imgmin.nof images.tim' if you have no frame grabber)

  87. Running TIMWIN
  88. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  89. Each time you invoke TIMWIN, a small command file (inidemo) runs
  90. which initialises the system. It also brings up a help page, which
  91. will give some startup information and allows you to browse through
  92. the on-line manual to inform yourself about TIMWIN. This may take
  93. some time.
  94. After you clicked OK in the message box, the help page disappears
  95. and TIMWIN is ready to use. First follow the instructions in
  96. 'Setting up the system'
  97.  
  98. You can use the TIMWIN functions interactively, either using dialog
  99. boxes (from the menu bar in the top of the main window) or using the
  100. command line (in the bottom of the main window). It is advised to
  101. first familiarise yourself with TIMWIN's concepts by browsing through
  102. the on line help (select Help on the main menu or press any other help
  103. button to start help).

  105. To see some image processing programs running, enter the command
  106.     *demo1 (the * indicates that the command is a command file)
  107. in the command line. This will start a set of pre-compiled programs,
  108. which will give you a good impression of TIMWIN's capabilities.
  109. Realise, that the demo's are the most informative on systems having a
  110. frame grabber, because then the process can be followed from image to
  111. image.

  113. Setting up the system
  114. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  115. First go to the Contr. menu and select Installation. Press the
  116. File Paths button and fill in absolute paths for the command file
  117. and image directories (e.g. 'c:\timwin\cmc').
  118. If there is a frame grabber in your system, after the installation you
  119. must go to Installation in the Contr menu, to adapt TIMWIN to the
  120. settings of your frame grabber.
  121. Also, if you use a memory mapped device like a frame grabber under
  122. Windows, be sure to have the line EMMExclude=D000-DFFF in your
  123. System.ini file (in the [386Enh] section. The values must conform the
  124. frame grabber's memory base adress).
  125. The same holds for the Emm386 driver that may be in your Config.sys
  126. file.
  127. If there is a network adapter in your system, be sure that you don't
  128. specify a frame grabber (if you don't have one). The default IO-address
  129. that TIMWIN uses to control the frame grabber is probably the same
  130. as your network adapter's, which will lead to malfunctioning network
  131. software.

  154. TIMWIN.EXE       The TIMWIN main program
  155. INSTALL.EXE      The installation program
  156. EDITCF.EXE       TIMWIN's editor (can also be used for other purposes)

  159.                  following files, depending on your frame grabber:
